The town of Milledgeville with a population of about 20,000 is located in central Georgia about 30 miles northeast of Macon. Milledgeville was the fourth capital of Georgia and was the seat of the state government throughout the Civil War.
The town has a revitalized historic district, which can best be experienced by taking the Milledgeville's Trolley Tour. The tour features rotating visits to the Old Governor's Mansion, the Old State Capitol, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Lockerly Hall and the Stetson-Sanford House all of which were constructed during the 19th century.
About five miles north of Milledgeville, on the Oconee River, is the Sinclair Dam built by the Georgia Power Company in the 50s. Behind the dam is Lake Sinclair, a recreational paradise with 417 miles of shoreline, over 15,000 acres of lake surface and 8 marinas.
Most hotels and motels in Milledgeville are located along highway 441, between downtown and the lake.
